So Which One Should You Book?
If your natural nails are thin, peeling, or growing out from acrylic, BIAB is the better place to start. A soft builder gel that flexes with the nail lifts less on a natural nail that's still recovering its own strength, and that flex is why it has become the most booked service in the suite. Natural nail growth carries on underneath the whole time, because the overlay sits on the nail plate instead of replacing it.
If your nails are already strong and your hands stay busy, hard gel is the sturdier build of the two. It's the denser builder gel, and it holds its shape under pressure instead of bending with the natural nail. The extra strength shows at the free edge, which is where a set usually gives out first.
Neither one gives you length. Both are overlays on the nail you already have, so a short nail is still a short nail underneath. Nail extensions are a separate system that starts with a tip, and at TLC that means Gel X.

What Is BIAB Called
in the USA?
BIAB stands for Builder in a Bottle, and it began as a product name from The GelBottle Inc, a British brand. In the UK and Australia the whole category took that brand's name, which is why almost every comparison you'll find for these two services was written for a salon in London or Sydney.
In the United States the same class of product is usually sold as builder gel, or soft builder gel, and plenty of American nail technicians won't recognize the letters BIAB on a service menu. It's the same soft gel doing the same structural job, and a US salon quoting you for a builder gel overlay is quoting you for a BIAB set. Thiara books it as BIAB because that's what her clients walk in asking for, and the bottle on her desk holds a builder gel either way.
BIAB, Hard Gel and Gel X Compared
All three are a gel cured under a lamp, holding a shape your nail can't hold on its own. None of them is gel polish, which only colors what's already there. What changes between them is how dense the cured gel is, and what it takes to get it off.

Most people who sit down with their own nails leave with BIAB on them. A flexible builder moves with a nail that's soft, short or recovering, so it lifts less than something rigid would, and it still adds enough thickness to stop a weak nail bending at the free edge. BIAB
A flexible builder is the point of BIAB, and it's also the limit. On a very long nail, or on hands that grip and pull all day, that give can let a free edge lift sooner than a rigid overlay would. It also runs on a schedule. An infill every three to four weeks keeps the apex balanced, and most of the breakage Thiara sees comes from a set left well past that. Removal is a real acetone soak, foils and all.
Hard Gel
It can't be soaked off. Acetone doesn't break this one down, so the only way out is filing the product thin without thinning the nail underneath, then letting the rest grow out. That also means the standard nail removal service doesn't cover hard gel. A fill is priced the same as a full set here, because the process is nearly identical.
Gel X
The tip is doing the structural work, so sizing is everything. A tip wider or longer than your nail bed wants is what causes catching and pops a week in. Length changes how you type, cook and open a can, which is worth picturing before you pick a size you've never worn.
What the Appointment and the Removal Involve
A builder gel appointment runs the same way whichever of the two builder gels you book, right up until the part where it comes off.
The nail comes first
Dry manicure and cuticle work, no soaking beforehand. The surface gets lightly buffed and dehydrated so the gel bonds to a clean nail plate instead of to oil.
The builder goes on in layers
Thin structured layers of builder gel, balanced so the apex sits where the nail needs support, each one cured under the LED lamp before the next. Where the apex sits is where the strength sits, and that part is the same for both.
Shape, file, finish
Buffed and filed smooth, then finished in the gel polish color you picked, or hand-painted nail art if that's what you came for.
Coming off again
BIAB and Gel X soak off in acetone. Hard gel is filed as thin as it can safely go and the rest grows out, the trade you accept for the denser build.

Hard gel and BIAB are not the same thing, although they belong to the same family. Both are builder gels applied over the natural nail and cured under an LED lamp, and both are overlays rather than extensions. BIAB, short for Builder in a Bottle, is a soft builder gel that stays flexible once cured and soaks off in acetone. Hard gel cures denser and more rigid, holds its shape under pressure, and cannot be soaked off at all. The two real negatives of BIAB are the upkeep and the flex.
