Hard Gel Nails
in Nottingham, MD
Hard gel is a firmer, denser gel system built over your natural nail, made for a set that holds up to daily wear better than a flexible overlay. It's applied one client at a time in a private suite by a dual-licensed nail technician, so nothing about your appointment gets rushed.

What Is a Hard Gel
Manicure?
A hard gel manicure builds a dense structural overlay directly on your natural nail, cured under an LED lamp in layers the same way a BIAB structured manicure is, just with a stiffer, more durable finished product. Gel polish colors the nail you already have; hard gel adds a denser structure underneath for a set that holds up to daily wear.
It is one of the harder services to find as a named, structured option outside a dedicated studio, which is part of why it belongs on the same shortlist as BIAB for clients serious about nail health. If added length is the actual goal, Gel X extensions reach it with a bonded soft gel tip. Hard gel does something different: it makes the length you already have hold up longer. Starting at $72, about 75 minutes, one client in the suite at a time.

Hard Gel or BIAB: Which Should You Book?
Both are structural gel overlays applied over your natural nail. The difference is how stiff the finish is, and how it comes off when you're ready for a change.
| Service | Feel | Best for | Removal | Appointment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hard Gel | Stiffer, more durable | Leaving acrylic, or hands that are rough on a set | Filed down, grown out (no soak) | 75 minutes |
| BIAB | Flexible, moves with the nail | Shorter, natural-length nails that need reinforcement | Acetone soak-off | 75 minutes |

Why Hard Gel Is Worth Asking For by Name
Thiara builds every hard gel set for nail health and durability first, then finishes it to the shape and color you came in for.
A Denser, Tougher Overlay
Hard gel is a stronger, more durable builder than BIAB's regular soft gel, made for hands that stay busy every day.
Holds Its Shape
Where BIAB flexes with the nail, hard gel stays rigid, which is what makes it the sturdier of the two overlays.
Natural Nail Underneath
The overlay sits on top of your own nail, protecting it while it keeps growing underneath.
Repairs, Not Just a Rebuild
A chipped tip or damaged sidewall can often be rebuilt with a nail form instead of starting the whole set over.
A denser structure is what makes an overlay hold up to daily wear.
What to Expect at Your Hard Gel Appointment
Come with clean, polish-free nails if you can, and skip heavy cuticle oil the day of your service. From there, it is Thiara's job. A dry manicure and cuticle work first, no soak, then the hard gel itself, built up in stages and balanced so the structure sits evenly instead of running heavy near the cuticle.
A full hard gel manicure runs about 75 minutes, and that time is booked for you alone. Each layer gets the curing it needs before the next one goes on, and the finish is buffed and filed smooth before polish goes on.
- Dry manicure and cuticle work, no soak
- Hard gel applied over the natural nail in stages
- LED curing at each stage
- Buffed and filed to a smooth, even finish
- Nail forms available to repair a chip or damaged sidewall
- Ready for polish or color
Hard Gel Sets by Thiara
Hard gel works especially well if you're leaving acrylic behind and want to start a natural nail routine without losing durability, or if your hands are rough on a set day to day and a flexible overlay just does not hold up. A chip or a damaged sidewall usually does not mean starting over either. Thiara can often rebuild it with a nail form instead.
If your natural nails run thin or brittle right now, ask about starting with BIAB instead. It flexes with shorter, natural-length nails while they build strength, and hard gel is usually the next step once there is more nail to work with.
Every finished set is shaped to your hands and finished in the color or design you choose. Nail art is hand-painted at the end for anyone who wants it.

Say goodbye to your mediocre nail salon. Thiara is the best nail tech I've had since living in Europe and New York. She has built a gorgeous salon in her beautiful home that is clean and serene. She is knowledgeable, talented, and lovely. After having terrible experiences at literally 5 different nail salons in Bel Air and Forest Hill, I decided to try a private nail tech and I am here to stay. For the acrylic girlies, this is your sign to give Gel X a try. Thiara's system is well worth converting to. Plus, her prices are great.
TLC was exactly what I've been longing for over several years: a professional nail manicurist that is knowledgeable, skillful, and really cares about the health of my nails. Thiara was very patient, answered all of my concerns, and educated me on the particulars of BIAB. I love how my nails turned out and I finally can rest from shopping all around for a professional manicurist.
I'm so glad I found Thiara as my new nail tech. I'm on my third hard gel set with her and I know they're going to last me a full 3 weeks until my next appointment. Her studio is super clean and she's very professional. She even mixed nail polishes to color match an inspo pic I showed her.
Thiara's work speaks for itself, and when it comes to designs, inspo, and work, she is a perfectionist which I love. Every time I get my nails done with her I am happy and satisfied. Her work area and space are always clean, her prices are reasonable, and her customer service is top tier.
I had an awesome experience with Thiara. She is so nice and her shop is warm and welcoming. I love that she's into nail care, which is exactly what I need. I asked for a very intricate design and she nailed it. She's very professional and you can tell she really loves what she does.
Thiara did an amazing job on my manicure. Not only was she quick, but she was efficient. My Gel X service was done in less than an hour and I did not feel like it was rushed. Oh, and she made sure my nails are within Army regulations.
I've done my nails with Thiara several times and I am so happy with her work. I usually don't like other people doing my nails, but I'm comfortable with her. I've done extensions and natural nails and she excels at both.
Love this set, I can't wait for my next one. I've been searching for somebody to do this style correctly and I've finally found it. Simple, but no one can manage to get this length and these results. Super grateful.
I love my nails. She did it exactly like the picture.
She literally is amazing, and always fulfills my creative desires. 10/10.
10/10 would recommend. Her services are amazing and fast. Love her for nails and waxing.
My nails look lovely. I appreciate the attention to detail. I already booked my next appointment. Highly recommend.
I enjoyed my experience at TLC. Thiara is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about her craft. I'll be sure to return.
It has been a pleasure to meet with T. I showed her an inspo pic and she exceeded my expectations. Can't wait to get my nails done by her again.
Thiara was very patient and willing to recommend what is best for you, and that was my favorite part. I left with fab nails and on my way to having healthier nails. Definitely recommend.
My nails are wonderful. Thiara did my sculpted hard gel nails beautifully. Her private nail salon suite was clean and welcoming. This was a better experience than going to a regular nail shop.
I really love the gel sets. They are less harsh on my nails and lasted a few days short of a month. The design was professional enough for work but also jazzy enough for everyday outings. I'll definitely be back.

Hard Gel Manicure FAQs
Hard gel nails use a firmer, denser gel system applied directly over your natural nail to build a stronger, more durable overlay than a flexible soft gel system like BIAB. It cures under an LED lamp in stages, then gets buffed and filed to a smooth, even finish. At TLC Nails and Esthetics, Thiara works with the Akzéntz Trinity hard gel system, a HEMA-free 3-in-1 formula, a meaningful detail for clients with a gel allergy. Every set is applied by a dual-licensed nail technician in a private suite in Nottingham, MD.
Hard gel is a firmer builder than BIAB's regular soft gel. A hard gel set typically holds about four weeks before it needs a fill, close to BIAB's usual three to four week infill window, so wear time is not really what separates them. BIAB flexes with the nail as it grows. Hard gel holds a stiffer structure that stands up better to hands that stay busy day to day.
Hard gel usually goes by hard gel or hard gel builder, though some technicians also say hard gel overlay. At TLC, it is simply listed as the Hard Gel Manicure in the booking widget, so there is nothing to translate or explain twice.
Ask for a hard gel manicure, or a hard gel overlay if you want to be specific about the structural system rather than a color. At TLC Nails and Esthetics, it is already a named service on this page, so just pick Hard Gel Manicure in the booking widget and the appointment sets itself up correctly.
Hard gel is applied over the natural nail rather than drilled into it, the same structural approach BIAB uses, so the nail underneath keeps growing and stays protected. That is the main difference from acrylic, which some techs still file aggressively to prep. How your own nails respond still depends on their condition going in, so ask Thiara directly if you have specific nail health concerns before booking.
Not on its own. Hard gel is an overlay built for strength, not for adding length. If longer nails are the goal, Thiara will point you toward Gel X extensions instead, which bond a soft gel tip onto the nail first. Hard gel is the pick when you want the length you already have to hold up better, not more of it.
Your hard gel appointment starts with a dry manicure and cuticle work, no soak, before any product goes on. From there, Thiara applies the hard gel in stages, curing each layer under an LED lamp, then buffs and files the finish smooth and ready for polish. A full hard gel set runs about 75 minutes, and you are the only client in the suite for all of it.
Yes. Thiara can add a nail form under the nail to rebuild a chipped tip or repair a damaged sidewall, often without redoing the whole set. It is one of the reasons hard gel gets recommended to clients whose hands take a beating day to day.
A hard gel fill is usually needed around the four-week mark. Thiara rebalances the nail using the same process as a full set, a dry manicure, cuticle work, and hard gel applied and buffed to a smooth finish, so a fill-in is priced the same as a new set.
Hard gel cannot be soaked off the way BIAB or Gel X can. It is a denser system, so acetone does not break it down. The only way to take it off is filing the product down as thin as possible without damaging the natural nail underneath, then letting the rest grow out. Because of that, hard gel is not part of the general nail removal service, which covers Gel X, BIAB, acrylic, and dip powder. Ask Thiara about timing if you are ready for a change.
Hard gel is especially for clients leaving acrylic behind who want to start a healthier natural nail routine, and for anyone whose hands are rough on a set day to day. Because it holds a stiffer structure than BIAB, it stands up to daily wear better than a flexible overlay does. If your natural nails still run thin or brittle, BIAB is usually the better starting point.
It is. Every hard gel appointment happens in a single private suite at 9706 Belair Rd in Nottingham, MD, with only you in the room. That matters most on a longer service like hard gel, where the structure goes on in stages and each one needs its own curing time.
A hard gel manicure at TLC Nails and Esthetics is $72, and a later fill-in is priced the same since the process is nearly identical. The price is shown on the service card in the booking widget on this page before you confirm anything, so there is no quote to wait on.
Yes. Hard gel is safe to have done while pregnant.
