At a glance

  • If you want length you haven't grown yet, that's Gel X. Builder gel is for making your own nails stronger while they grow.
  • A full set of either is $65. BIAB is booked for 75 minutes and Gel X for 60.
  • Both can be filled here. A Gel X Fill-in is $50, and a BIAB infill is booked as a regular BIAB appointment at the full-set price.
  • Both wear about three to four weeks, and both soak off in acetone.
  • Hard gel, the stiffer builder, is an overlay too, and it can't be soaked off.
The difference

What Is the Difference Between Builder Gel and Gel X?

The difference between builder gel and Gel X is that builder gel strengthens the nail you already have, and Gel X adds length with a pre-shaped soft gel tip. Builder gel is applied directly to your natural nail. Thiara preps the nail, brushes on a structured layer, balances the apex where the nail needs support and cures it under the LED lamp.

Gel X starts from a tip. After the same kind of prep, Thiara sizes a soft gel tip from the Apres Gel-X system to each nail. The tip covers the whole nail, and it's bonded with a gel adhesive, cured, then shaped and sealed with gel polish. Because the gel tips come pre-shaped, a set can go from short to long in one appointment. Thiara, a licensed nail technician and esthetician, does both at TLC Nails and Esthetics in Nottingham, MD, and when a client wants length, she books Gel X.

On the TLC menu the soft builder gel is called BIAB, short for Builder in a Bottle, and it's the most-booked service in the suite. Gel X is the next most booked. The service page for builder in a bottle nails has the whole BIAB appointment, infills included.

A full set of either one costs the same at TLC. What separates them is length, upkeep and how long you sit for each.

The fill

Can Gel X Be Filled?

Gel X can be filled at TLC Nails and Esthetics. The Gel X Fill-in is $50, booked for 60 minutes, and Thiara's booking page describes it as a way to "refresh your Gel-X set without starting from scratch": reshaping, nail prep and filling in the natural nail growth.

You'll often read that Gel X can't be filled and has to come off and go back on each time. At TLC the set stays on, the fill brings it up to where your nail has grown, and you keep the length you came in with. A set runs about three to four weeks between fills.

A Gel X set here can be filled, the same as a BIAB set.

Short nails

Which Is Better for Short, Thin or Bitten Nails?

Builder gel is the better fit for short, thin or bitten nails when the goal is growing them out. It strengthens the nail itself, so whatever you grow has support as it passes the fingertip. BIAB is made for short to medium nails and for anyone starting to grow their natural nails out.

Brittle nails and nails coming off acrylic suit BIAB too. A flexible builder moves with a nail that's still soft or recovering.

Short nails you'd like long right away call for a different appointment. The tip does that part, so book Gel X extensions and pick the shape at the start of the visit.

Not sure which side of that line you're on? When you arrive, Thiara assesses your natural nails and talks through the shape and length you want before anything goes on. If you'd rather know before you book, ask her first.

Nail health

Is Builder Gel Healthier Than Gel X?

Builder gel and Gel X are both gentle on the natural nail when they're applied and removed properly, so neither one is better for nail health by default. Both are soft gels that soak off in acetone, and both go on after a light buff with no harsh drilling.

The removal is where nails get hurt. A set that's picked or peeled off at home takes a layer of nail with it, and so does a set filed off too hard. At TLC both come off with an acetone soak and hand filing, and no drill touches the natural nail. Soak-off nail removal is $20 for a set done here and $30 for one from another salon.

Builder gel pulls ahead in one case, a nail that's still recovering. It adds support to the nail plate while it grows, which is why Thiara reaches for BIAB after acrylic damage or a long run of breaking.

The other builder

Where Hard Gel Fits In

Hard gel is the second builder gel on the TLC menu, a denser one for hands that are rough on a set and natural nails that need more support than BIAB gives. It's an overlay only, so it doesn't add length either.

It also can't be soaked off, so it's filed thin and grown out, and the standard Nail Removal service doesn't cover it. The BIAB vs hard gel comparison, another of the TLC nail care guides, puts the two builders side by side, and the page on hard gel nails covers the system Thiara uses.

Questions

Builder Gel and Gel X FAQs

Gel X is not the same as builder gel. Gel X is a pre-shaped, full-cover soft gel tip bonded to the natural nail to add length, and builder gel is an overlay brushed over your own nail to make it stronger. Both soak off in acetone.

BIAB is a builder gel. The name is short for Builder in a Bottle, a soft builder gel that stays slightly flexible once it's cured, and it's the most-booked service at TLC Nails and Esthetics.

BIAB vs Gel X comes down to whether you want strength or length. Book BIAB if you want your natural nails stronger while they grow, and book Gel X if you want length you haven't grown yet. Both full sets are $65 at TLC Nails and Esthetics, so the price won't decide it.

Builder gel and Gel X last about the same time, roughly three to four weeks with proper prep and care. A BIAB infill or a Gel X Fill-in around that mark keeps either set going while the natural nail grows.

Builder gel does not add length at TLC Nails and Esthetics. It's an overlay on your natural nail, so it protects what you grow and helps it last past the fingertip. For added length, Thiara books Gel X, a soft gel tip bonded to the nail.

Gel X is not damaging to natural nails when it's applied and removed properly. The prep is a gentle buff with no harsh drilling, and the set comes off with an acetone soak. Damage usually comes from picking a set off at home or filing it off too hard.

The disadvantages of builder gel are the upkeep, the removal and the fact that it adds no length. A set needs an infill every three to four weeks and comes off with a full acetone soak. At TLC an infill is booked as the regular BIAB appointment and priced the same as a full set.

The healthiest nail option is the one that suits the natural nail underneath and comes off without force. For a weak or recovering nail that's usually a builder gel overlay, and for length it's soft gel tips that soak off. Thiara looks at your nails at the start of the appointment and tells you which one she'd use.

A BIAB full set and a Gel X full set are both $65 at TLC Nails and Esthetics in Nottingham, MD. A Gel X Fill-in is $50, and BIAB Nail Repair is $10 for one nail on a set done at TLC. A BIAB infill is the price of a full set.

Builder gel and Gel X are both removed with an acetone soak and hand filing, with no drill on the natural nail. At TLC Nails and Esthetics, Nail Removal is $20 for a set done here and Foreign Nail Removal is $30 for a set from another salon. Hard gel is the exception, since it can't be soaked off.

Nail art goes on builder gel and Gel X the same way at TLC Nails and Esthetics, priced by design tier: Simple $20, Intermediate $30 and Advanced $50. Each tier costs the same for one nail or all ten, and French tips sit in the Intermediate tier.

Builder gel and Gel X both need a fill about every three to four weeks. A BIAB infill is booked as the regular BIAB appointment and priced the same as a full set, because it takes the same prep and the same amount of work. A Gel X Fill-in is its own appointment, $50 for 60 minutes.

Say goodbye to your mediocre nail salon. Thiara is the best nail tech I've had since living in Europe and New York. She has built a gorgeous salon in her beautiful home that is clean and serene. She is knowledgeable, talented, and lovely. After having terrible experiences at literally 5 different nail salons in Bel Air and Forest Hill, I decided to try a private nail tech and I am here to stay. For the acrylic girlies, this is your sign to give Gel X a try. Thiara's system is well worth converting to. Plus, her prices are great.
